Foot Beauty and Diabetes
July 22nd, 2007 — Feet
Diabetes can make foot care more challenging. Diabetes effects feet the following ways:
- Nerve damage-pain, heat, or cold may not be felt in your legs and feet. A sore or cut on your foot may get worse because you do not know it is there and do not treat it with first aide. This can increase the risk of infetion.
- Poor blood flow-this will slow down the healing of any sore or infection.
To keep feet beautiful even with the complications of diabetes, extra foot care will be needed. Here are some things that can be done:
- Wash feet in warm water daily-test temperature with wrist and not feet. Do not soak feet.
- Check feet daily for any injury or abrasions-treat with first aide and area clean.
- Moisturize dry feet-reduces the risk of cracked skin
- Keep nail trimmed and filed
- File corns and callouses gently
- Keep feet covered-especially if going outdoors
- Wear only well-fitting shoes and check inside of shoes for wear that may cause blisters or abrasions
Maintaining proper blood sugar levels will minimize the side effects of diabetes that will effect feet. With a little extra care, feet can be beautiful.
Missing Teeth
July 22nd, 2007 — Teeth
Most redneck characters will have a missing tooth or two and it adds to their character. For the rest of us, missing teeth are a cause of embarrassment, shame, and self-consciousness. Causes of tooth loss:
- Accident-tooth is knocked out or severely damaged
- Decay-tooth will fall out on own or need to be pulled
- Gun disease-gum no longer can support tooth
Missing teeth not only detract from beauty, but can impact a person’s life in the following ways:
- Can lead to changes in speech
- affect self-confidence
- When the gap is left there for long enough, the neighboring teeth can start to migrate from their proper positions, creating misalignment of the teeth, change your bite, which can in turn lead to gum disease, and bite problems and headaches.
- When teeth are lost for a long time, the area of the jawbone starts to erode where the tooth was.
- Over time, you can lose so much bone that your jaw will need a bone graft to build up the bone in your jaw to place implants or make a denture that fits properly.
- Tooth loss affects how well you chew and what food you are able to eat.
- Inability to chew properly can lead to poor nutrition, which can affect overall health.
The best thing to do is to prevent the loss of teeth in the first place with proper care of teeth and gums. Accidental loss can be prevented by the use of mouth protectors.

Beautiful Hands and Health Care Workers
July 22nd, 2007 — Women
Health-care workers’ hands are frequent washed and will often become dry and cracked. This can increase their risk of infection when exposed to infectious material in the work place. This can effect the beauty of their hands.
Health-care workers can’t just grab any moisturizer to provide relief from the effects of frequent hand washing and exposure to disinfectants. Some moisturizers aren’t compatible and will reduce the effectiveness of some infection barriers like latex gloves.
The following conditions can be managed with the use of proper moisturizers
- Dry, flaky skin
- Crusty bumps
- Redness
- Pain
- Itching
- Localized inflammation
Only moisturizers that are approved by the Infection Control Department can be used by health care workers Using the wrong moisturizer can put a health-care worker at risk if the moisturizer could compromise the integrity of the gloves used for protection from bodily fluids.
Glove liners may help to protect severely irritated hands, damaged hands from further irritation from the gloves until healing is finished. It will also provide a barrier if the gloves are the source of irritation.
When not at work, extra hand care that includes regular moisturizing, will help keep health care workers’ hands beautiful.
Hair Loss
July 22nd, 2007 — Hair
Youthfulness is often associated with a thick, full head of hair. For men, having a full head of hair can represent vitality. For women, thick, styled hair is part of their beauty. For either gender to have thinning hair or even worse, have bald spots, it can be devastating to self-image.
Hair has a simple life cycle.
- Each hair has a life expectancy of 2-6 years
- Hair grows less than half an inch a month until it goes into a 2-3 month long resting stage.
- After resting, the hair will fall out and it will be replaced by a new hair.
Those who have thinning hair or a bald spot knows there are factors that interrupt that cycle and the cycle may be efficient on some parts of the scalp but non-existent on other parts.
Causes of hair loss:
- Stress from illness or surgery (hair loss occurs 3-4 months afterwards)
- Hormonal imbalance
- Giving birth
- Fungal infection of scalp
- Symptom of disease
- Common baldness (age related)
When related conditions can’t be remedied, people can accept thinning or balding hair or try over the counter treatments or medical treatments like hair restoration. Properly styled hair will reduce the appearance of thin hair and minimize beginning baldness.
