Diabetes can make foot care more challenging. Diabetes effects feet the following ways:

  • Nerve damage-pain, heat, or cold may not be felt in your legs and feet. A sore or cut on your foot may get worse because you do not know it is there and do not treat it with first aide. This can increase the risk of infetion.
  • Poor blood flow-this will slow down the healing of any sore or infection.

To keep feet beautiful even with the complications of diabetes, extra foot care will be needed. Here are some things that can be done:

  • Wash feet in warm water daily-test temperature with wrist and not feet. Do not soak feet.
  • Check feet daily for any injury or abrasions-treat with first aide and area clean.
  • Moisturize dry feet-reduces the risk of cracked skin
  • Keep nail trimmed and filed
  • File corns and callouses gently
  • Keep feet covered-especially if going outdoors
  • Wear only well-fitting shoes and check inside of shoes for wear that may cause blisters or abrasions

Maintaining proper blood sugar levels will minimize the side effects of diabetes that will effect feet. With a little extra care, feet can be beautiful.
