Fall Foot Care

Saturday, September 8th, 2007

It seems that everyone starts to worry about how their feet look in the summertime, when the shoe stores begin displaying strappy sandals. As summer ends, feet still need pampering!

Here are some of the things that you can do:

  • You need to start by using a foot file to remove any dry, hard, calloused skin before you take a bath or a shower. Make sure to pay particular attention to your heels and the balls of your feet.
  • Use special foot cream to moisturize your feet each day. These will hydrate your dry, thick skin and stop your heels from cracking.
  • Make sure to wear various heights of heels so that you can keep your calf muscles flexible. It is also a good idea to use padded insoles to cushion the balls of your feet.
  • Whenever you wear sandals, make sure to apply sunscreen to your feet. They are perfectly angled to get most of the sun’s damaging rays.
  • Take time to soak your feet each week in water that contains some peppermint, cypress, lavender, pine, frankincense, or tea tree oil. You may also want to add a couple tablespoons of powdered milk too.
  • Keep your toes well-manicured if you like wearing nail polish on them.
  • Treat yourself to a pedicure at the end of the summer. This will help with any summer time wear and tear on feet and nails

These tips will keep feet pretty and beautiful year round. When summer rolls around again, feet will be ready for those strappy sandals.

Foot Beauty and Diabetes

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

Diabetes can make foot care more challenging. Diabetes effects feet the following ways:

  • Nerve damage-pain, heat, or cold may not be felt in your legs and feet. A sore or cut on your foot may get worse because you do not know it is there and do not treat it with first aide. This can increase the risk of infetion.
  • Poor blood flow-this will slow down the healing of any sore or infection.

To keep feet beautiful even with the complications of diabetes, extra foot care will be needed. Here are some things that can be done:

  • Wash feet in warm water daily-test temperature with wrist and not feet. Do not soak feet.
  • Check feet daily for any injury or abrasions-treat with first aide and area clean.
  • Moisturize dry feet-reduces the risk of cracked skin
  • Keep nail trimmed and filed
  • File corns and callouses gently
  • Keep feet covered-especially if going outdoors
  • Wear only well-fitting shoes and check inside of shoes for wear that may cause blisters or abrasions

Maintaining proper blood sugar levels will minimize the side effects of diabetes that will effect feet. With a little extra care, feet can be beautiful.

Natural Beauty Products

Things from nature can add to natural beauty. Look around the yard, kitchen cabinets, and in the refrigerator before heading to the cosmetics department.

From the yard:

  • Aloe Vera-it protects and heals skin. As it dries, it will also slightly tighten up sagging skin. Cut a piece of Aloe Vera off the plant. Trim off all spines. Open from the base where it is cut and slightly separate the sides. The inside will contain gel and juice that can be applied to skin. Store in a airtight container or plastic bag. Use within a few days. Aloe Vera gel can be applied to eyelashes as a mascara alternative.
  • Lemons-has several uses as a beauty aid. To lighten discolored elbows, cut lemon in half and hold cut end on elbow for about 10 minutes then wash and apply lotion. To exfoliate skin, rub a cut lemon and sugar on skin 1-2x per week. It will also help age spots and freckles lighten. Especially blond haired people will benefit from using the juice from one lemon mixed with a cup of warm water as a hair conditioner. A few tablespoons of lemon juice mixed with olive oil rubbed into the scalp will treat dandruff problems. Soaking feet in lemon juice, olive oil, and milk will make feet soft and smooth within weeks.

From the kitchen:

  • Coffee-use the left over coffee or run the water through used coffee grounds. Brunettes can use this to rinse hair. Be sure coffee is completely cooled.
  • Olive oil-warmed it can be used as a hot oil treatment for hair. It can also be rubbed into troublesome dry spots on skin.
  • Vinegar-can be used as a hair rinse and help control dandruff.

There are many recipes for beauty products, which use natural ingredients from the kitchen.

Beautiful Feet

Monday, May 28th, 2007

It’s summer and sandals are being pulled out of the closets, from under the bed, and off the store shelves. At the same time, feet are getting attention and their own beauty routine.
A simple home pedicure is a good place to start when beautifying feet.

  1. Trim toe nails straight across. Take a file to smooth the nail and gently round the edges.
  2. Use cuticle oil and a strong foot cream. Massage it in. Pay special attention to rough heels and balls of feet.
  3. With rolled up paper, toe spacer, or a few cotton balls, make room between each toe.
  4. Use nail polish remover to remove any oil or cream that may interfere with polish adhering to nails.
  5. Apply a protective base coat and 2-3 coats of nail polish.

Nail polish is a part of most beautiful foot routines.
Be creative with nail polish. Summer is a perfect time for corals and berries because they are the same colors of summer fruits. White will complete a beautiful white outfit with white sandals. Women with darker skin may choose an opaque white. Try a “French manicure” painted style with two shades of pink. Add crystals and use metallic colors to reflect the summer sun.
Nail polish hints:

  • When a favorite nail polish thickens up, instead of throwing it away, add a few drops of nail polish thinner
  • If nail polish ends up on skin instead of nails, a cotton swab dipped in nail polish remover will easily fix mistakes (gently squeeze off excess remover)
  • Two thin coats will dry faster and may be more lasting than a single thick coat.
  • A base coat protect your nail and a top coat protect your polish.

Pamper your feet and they will reward you by looking beautiful though out the summer months.
