Naturally Curly Hair

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

Try not to fight your hair, if your hair is naturally curly find a style that compliments your curls. Fighting against naturally curly hair is time consuming, frustrating, and may cause hair damage.

Once you have a hair style that compliments your naturally curly hair, the next thing is to find a shampoo and conditioner that keeps curls hydrated and reduces the frizzies. There are many hair products out there. Try different ones until you find the one that is best for your hair. Use each one about two weeks. If the conditioner doesn’t detangle hair, apply a detangler.

When hair is clean and damp, apply hair serum and gel to hair. Be sure to work down into ends. Some women will skip brushing hair, while others will brush their hair wet. Many women with curly hair find it is more damaging to hair to brush dry. There also may be increased hair loss from the brush when curly hair is brushed when dry.

After running fingers through your hair or brushing your hair, it can be left alone to dry naturally or with a defuser on a hair dryer. To get a more finished look twist hair into ringlets or hair sections can be rolled in circles and secured. Leave until dry and then gently separate. Finish with a light mist of hairspray and you are ready to go.

Summer Hair

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

Keeping hair beautiful in the summer can be challenging. Hair can have the following problems:

  • Dry and brittle hair
  • Sun bleached hair
  • Wild hair

Dry and brittle hair can be protected with leave in moisturizers and sunscreens. Hats and scarves are also effective to protect hair from sun damage. Once hair is damaged, use deep conditioners once a week. After a particularly harsh day in the sun and exposure to pool chemicals apply a hot oil treatment to hair.

Sun bleached hair can be several shades lighter than normal hair color. Protect hair from sun bleaching with hats and scarves. Pulling hair up if it is long enough will keep the sun off some of the hair. Longer hair will show the effects of sun lightened hair. It will be more noticeable in the winter with the new growth several shades darker than the ends. In severe cases of sun-bleached hair, the hair can be colored back to its natural shade.

Wild hair is common with summer activities. Hair is blown around. Hair is wet from swimming, sweating, and water games and left to dry without styling. Long hair can be tied up in a variety of ways. Short hair can be held in place with barrettes, hairpins, and headbands. Changing hairstyle to a simple easy to care for style will keep hair looking beautiful.
Protecting hair from the effects of summer and immediately taking care of any damage that occurs from the sun will assure beautiful hair.

Hair Loss

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

Youthfulness is often associated with a thick, full head of hair. For men, having a full head of hair can represent vitality. For women, thick, styled hair is part of their beauty. For either gender to have thinning hair or even worse, have bald spots, it can be devastating to self-image.

Hair has a simple life cycle.

  1. Each hair has a life expectancy of 2-6 years
  2. Hair grows less than half an inch a month until it goes into a 2-3 month long resting stage.
  3. After resting, the hair will fall out and it will be replaced by a new hair.

Those who have thinning hair or a bald spot knows there are factors that interrupt that cycle and the cycle may be efficient on some parts of the scalp but non-existent on other parts.

Causes of hair loss:

  1. Stress from illness or surgery (hair loss occurs 3-4 months afterwards)
  2. Hormonal imbalance
  3. Giving birth
  4. Fungal infection of scalp
  5. Symptom of disease
  6. Common baldness (age related)

When related conditions can’t be remedied, people can accept thinning or balding hair or try over the counter treatments or medical treatments like hair restoration. Properly styled hair will reduce the appearance of thin hair and minimize beginning baldness.
