The 1980s saw the launch of many iconic perfumes but one of the most shocking was Dior Poison, by Christian Dior. Dior Poison was launched in 1985 and it was a true departure from Dior’s previous fragrances. The fragrance division of Dior was seen as a little behind the times at this point – their best-selling fragrance was 1947 perfume Miss Dior. Dior Poison was designed to revitalise the perfume house and announce a new face of Dior – and boy, did it succeed.

From its name to its notes, Dior Poison was very different to other perfumes on the market in 1985. Even its name was considered shocking – why would any woman want to wear something called æPoisonÆ? Luckily many women did. Personally I did not much like Poison when I first smelt it. It is a very strong, full-bodied floral, with rich fruits that seemed overpowering. But it has grown on me. Dior Poison is definitely not a perfume for little girls – it is elegant and stylish but also dark, mysterious and seductive. In terms of notes, Dior Poison uses top notes of red berry, coriander, plum, anise and Brazilian rosewood. The middle notes are orange blossom, honey, carnation, tuberose, cinnamon and opopanax; the base contains sandalwood, ambered musk, vanilla, vetiver, heliotrope and cedar.

Like this original Dior Poison this fragrance is rich and passionate, but it has a sweetness and gourmand depth. I have to say that I prefer Hypnotic Poison to the original Poison but that is just my personal taste – both are masterpiece fragrances. Hypnotic Poison was the first fragrance launched under the directorship of John Galliano and it shows. It is wonderfully theatrical, with a warmth and colour that invite you in. The fragrance contains top notes of allspice, apricot, plum and coconut; heart notes of tuberose, jasmine, lily-of-the-valley, rose and Brazilian rosewood; and a base of sandalwood, vanilla and almond.
