Minnesota Lawmaker Wants Fragrance-Free Education

In Minneapolis, some metropolitan schools are considering adopting a “fragrance-free” policy. The policy would ban public school students from wearing cologne, perfume and other scented cosmetics to class.

A recent report from the Health Department to the State Legislature stated that the use of such products has gone up substantially in recent years. Furthermore, the report says that vapors from the scented products can “eye and respiratory problems” and possibly trigger asthma attacks.

Though a ban like this in public schools may be a little extreme, you should be very careful as not to wear too much perfume or cologne, particularly in a closed environment like a classroom or office. Some people are allergic to fragrance, while others have health problems that can be effected.

Just a light spray of your favorite scent is all that is needed, no one needs to smell your cologne from several feet away, or worse yet from across the room. Your fragrance shouldn’t be overpowering to anyone around you.

Just some common sense and courtesy of others around you is necessary, rather than laws and regulations actually banning fragrances.

Don’t layer your fragrances. A scented shower gel, body lotion, hand cream, body powder and cologne aren’t all necessary. Keep things to a minimum. Sometimes less is more. That’s definitely the case with fragrance.
