A perfumer is someone who makes and sells perfumes. Here’s a little bit about a couple people behind the fragrances.
Lorenzo Villoresi is well known all over the world for his custom-made fragrances. Lorenzo is a self-trained perfumer from Florence. His educational background includes ancient history, philosophy, and religion. He had traveled extensively through Northern Africa and the Middle-East before he focused on perfumery and fragrant raw materials. His first book’s title translates as “Perfume: Culture, History, and Techniques”. The book contains descriptions of perfumery techniques, an overview of raw materials and essences, separate chapters on the history of perfume and famous perfume quotes in literature. There is even a special section dedicated to aromatherapy. There is an extensive glossary. In the book, Villoresi’s personal accounts and views on perfumery are included. Although these biographical snippets play a small role in the book, their reconstruction will contribute to a better understanding of the concepts and ideas behind Villoresi’s fragrant creations.
Laura Tonatto from Italy is also known as the Italian nose. She an imaginative and very creative perfumer. Laura is especially famous for developing scents inspired by literary and artistic works. One of them is Proust’s delicious madeleine’s. She has also created perfumes that were based on ancient recipes. She was born in 1963 and began creating scents at an early age. Grasse in France inspired her. The perfumer,Hassan in Cairo, and Serge Kalouguine (whose creations include Olene, at the Perfumery Fragonard in Grasse) were her teachers. In 1986, at only twenty-three, Laura created her first custom-made perfumes. Tonatto’s perfumes include:
- Mediteranneo for Carthusia
- Oltre, E. Duse
- Aqua Admirabilis
She has her own very up-market product range, but she also works with L’Oreal as well as Carthusia. She doesn’t stop there, she has recently begun designing perfumes for exclusive hotels. The smell of the lime tree in the garden inspired her scent for the San Clemente Palace Hotel in Venice. The deluxe Hyatt Hotels have their scents designed by Laura.
Scent is a part of the over all perception of beauty, and these two perfumers have done their part to provide wonderful scents.
